1899 Ferecvaros are founded in Hungary
1924 During the 0-0 draw with Birmingham, Cardiff City's Len Davies missed a penalty. If he had been successful his club would have won the League Championship. As it was the failed by just 0.2 of a goal (calculated on the goal average system in place at the time) and the title went to Huddersfield. Davies played for Cardiff City from 1920 to 1931 and scored 126 goals in 303 League games, won a FA Cup medal against Arsenal in 1927 and a runners-up medal in 1925 against Sheffield United. An automatic choice for Wales in the 1920's he was capped 22 times.
1928 Jack Harkness, Queens Park and Scotland goalkeeper, signed for Heart of Midlothian as a professional. First played for Queens Park in 1925 at the age of seventeen and won his first Scotland cap in 1927. Altogether he played in 12 full internationals and 2 amateur between 1926 and 1934 and, when he left the first class game in 1937 he had played in 385 Scottish League matches. Became Football Editor of the Sunday Post; a position he held for many years.
1952 Newcastle United win the FA Cup when they beat Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley.
1952 Reading half-back Jack Lewis converted a penalty during his club's 5-0 win over Bournemouth and set a new Football League record of 15 goals for a non-forward in a season. The previous record was held by Arthur Grimsdell who had scored 14 for Tottenham Hotspur in 1920.
1971 Arsenal clinched the first leg of their "double" when they won the League with a 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur.
1975 West Ham United beat Fulham 2-0 to win the FA Cup Final with two goals from Alan Taylor in the second half.
1980 Liverpool are crowned champions. They have now won it a record twelve times.
1980 Crewe Alexandra's goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar scored from the penalty spot against York City.
1999 In a Spanish match between Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao the referre Antonio Lopez Nieto has to show 16 yellow and 2 red cards during a fiery match.
